Everton would welcome back Wayne Rooney at Goodison Park, according to their young left-back Luke Garbutt.
In an interview with the Football Hour podcast, Garbutt suggested Rooney would improve any team in the world.
“If you put him into any team he’s going to improve it,” Garbutt said. “Why wouldn’t you have him back at Everton? Stranger things have happened haven’t they?”
Rooney hasn’t started the season especially well, which has led to him being dropped from Jose Mourinho’s starting eleven at Old Trafford.
He’s having a difficult time in the England national team as well. The fans booed him off the pitch during the England – Malta World Cup qualifier last week and he was also been dropped from the squad for the trip to Slovenia.
The 30-year-old Manchester United captain has three more years to run on his contract at Old Trafford, but he’s unlikely to stay at the club until 2019.
He’s not really the same player anymore and his presence on the pitch is more often than not a hindrance to his team’s performance.
United have been linked with a move for Real Madrid attacker Isco in recent weeks as they need to replace Rooney with a better player as soon as possible.
Isco hasn’t been a regular starter under Zidane so far, but he’s definitely faster and much more creative. Rooney will surely finish the season at United, but his departure next summer looks increasingly likely.
Even though a return to Everton seems possible, Rooney would probably choose to continue his career in the United States as he’s nothing left to prove at the top level.
