Report: Italian side interested in Manchester United man

Darmian

Inter Milan are interested in signing Manchester United right-back Matteo Darmian on a season-long loan deal, according to Gazzetta Dello Sport.

The Italian sports daily claims Inter manager Frank De Boer wants to sign a right-back before the transfer deadline and has identified Darmian as a key target.

The Nerazzurri are also believed to be tracking Stephan Lichtsteiner and Domenico Criscito, but Darmian appears to be the most likely candidate to end up at the San Siro this week.

However, the report goes on to suggest Darmian’s salary could prove to be a stumbling block.

The 26-year-old former Torino defender is yet to feature under Jose Mourinho and appears to be behind Antonio Valencia in the pecking order at United.

Darmian struggled to establish himself as a regular starter in Van Gaal’s team last season and it seems like he’s not an essential part of Mourinho’s plans either.

Even though United need squad depth this season given their commitments in the Europa League, it’d be better for Darmian to return to Italy in search for regular first-team football.

He needs to play regularly for the sake of his international career and if he leaves, it’d give Fosu-Mensah, who will reportedly be used at right-back this season, even more opportunities to play.
