Arsenal are reportedly interested in 32 year old Southampton center back Jose Fonte according to ESPNFC. Fonte is also a target of Manchester United.
After injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista, Arsenal are looking to add a veteran center back to fill in until these two players get fit.
Fonte has played with Southampton since all the way back in the 2010-2011 season when they were down in League One, and he has really emerged as a quality center back in recent years.
Fonte averaged 1.4 tackles per game last season along with 2.2 interceptions per game, 0.9 blocks per game and 6.1 clearances per game.
He had similarly good numbers two seasons ago when he had 2.1 tackles per game, 3.2 interceptions per game, 0.6 blocks per game, and 5.5 clearances per game.
Fonte has had two good seasons in a row, and he would definitely provide Arsenal with some much needed help at center back. However, Manchester United is also interested in the player, and if the Red Devils truly want Fonte it is unlikely that the Gunners would be able to win a bidding war against them.
