Report: Manchester United want to sign commanding centre-back

Old Trafford

Jose Mourinho wants to sign a commanding centre-back this month, according to ESPN.

However, the report claims United have told Mourinho he needs to sell some players before making more acquisitions, with Schweinsteiger, Januzaj and Mata prime candidates to leave the club.

ESPN go on to suggest Mourinho has identified Juventus’ Leonardo Bonucci and Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane to strengthen his defense even further.

United are believed to have already held informal talks with Juventus and Real Madrid, even though the chances of signing either player are slim.

The Red Devils have already signed Eric Bailly this summer, but Mourinho is thought to be keen to add more experience to his defense.

Given the injury problems of Jones and Rojo, signing another centre-back seems like a smart move.

Varane is a quality player, but Bonucci would be the perfect signing for this United team. He’d add leadership, experience and immense quality to the side.

However, Juventus are unlikely to let him leave, especially after Pogba’s departure.

United have also been linked with Ezequiel Garay and Jose Fonte, who are both much more realistic targets in this transfer window.
