Arsenal are currently considering a shock swoop for Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen, according to reports from Sport (via the Daily Express)
Vermaelen joined Barcelona from Arsenal during the summer of 2014 for a fee believed to be in the region of around £15 million but it has to be said that the move has not quite worked out.
Vermaelen set for Arsenal move?
The defender has been limited to only 21 appearances in all competitions throughout the course of the last two seasons and it is widely expected that Barcelona will now be looking to cut their losses on the Belgian international this summer, especially after having signed Samuel Umtiti.
A move back to the Premier League with either West Ham United or Liverpool had been seen as a possibility for Vermaelen but now according to reports from Sport, claims are being made that Arsenal are also considering a shock swoop for the 30-year-old.

Arsenal are currently in the market to sign a new central defender after Per Mertesacker was ruled out for four months due to injury and now manager Arsene Wenger is believed to be looking at the possibility of bringing back Vermaelen to the Emirates Stadium.
Even the player is allegedly keen on making a move back to Arsenal and it will be interesting to see what sort of deal the Gunners will be able to negotiate for the former Ajax star.
