Liverpool have joined the race to sign 25-year-old French forward Georginio Wijnaldum from Championship club Newcastle, as per Daily Mirror.

The Reds are joined in his chase by fellow rivals Everton and Tottenham, both of whom are looking to add to their strike force in the buildup to 2016/17 season.

Newcastle bought him from Dutch side PSV last summer for £14.5 million. However, despite spending only one season at Newcastle, Wijnaldum is already seeking an exit route from St. James Park following the relegation of Newcastle.

Although Newcastle were woeful in front of goal, Wijnaldum did his best to keep the club afloat. He scored 11 times in 38 games last season to become the top scorer for Newcastle.

Due to his brilliant form, Newcastle are adamant of selling their star striker for £25 million.

Liverpool is preparing to offload both Balotelli and Benteke in the coming weeks. While the former will leave Liverpool for a meager fee, the latter could go for a fee in the vicinity of £32.5 million that Liverpool paid for his services last summer.

Thus, following the departure of the duo, Liverpool could be short on the attacking front in the upcoming season. As a result, a move for Wijnaldum could be on their cards in the coming weeks.
