Reports: Arsenal want Brazilian striker as Jamie Vardy alternative

After missing out on Jamie Vardy, Arsenal have shifted their attention to Santos’ next Brazilian striking starlet, Gabriel Barbosa.

According to The Sun’s Andrew Richardson (via ESPN Brazil), Gabriel Barbosa, or Gabigol as he is affectionately known as, has emerged as Arsene Wenger’s next target.

Gabigol acknowledged he would be interested in moving to one of Europe’s elite clubs, but stressed his reluctance to leave his hometown at this time of his career.

“Yes, I have offers from some of the big clubs in Europe that interest me, but that is for my parents and my employers, but I am happy at Santos.

“That will sort itself out in time. Santos is my home, but we will make a calm decision.”

The report from Brazil claims that Fiorentina have made a £25 million bid for the 19-year old striker has. Arsenal would likely have to offer somewhere in the same region if they wish to secure the services of Gabigol.

The young striker was involved in Brazil’s unsuccessful Copa America campaign this summer. He made three appearances, two from the bench, and scored one goal in Brazil’s 7-1 win over Haiti.

Gabriel Barbosa is without a doubt a great talent, and it’s very likely that Arsenal are monitoring his situation. However, it is up to debate whether they’ve genuinely registered interest.

It appears the story was fed by the player’s representatives in the hope of attracting the attention of a larger club willing to pay more than the apparent £25 million. By throwing at a club name like Arsenal, they are in effect hoping it will trigger a flurry of offers.

This rumor should be viewed with skepticism for now.
