Klopp reportedly eyeing River Plate’s defender, watches him live at Copa America

The Mirror reports Liverpool could be holding Argentine defender Gabriel Mercado as their new transfer target.

Mercado is currently a member of River Plate, and he is also a part of the Argentine national squad. The twenty-nine-year-old defender had a few astonishing performances last season, and maybe this was the main reason for Jurgen Klopp to take a closer look at him.

Reportedly, on Tuesday, Klopp was seen alongside Gonzalo Higuain’s brother at Copa America’s clash between Argentina and Chile. At the time everyone thought Klopp was discussing Higuain’s potential transfer to Liverpool, but now it looks more like he was actually watching Mercado in action.

With Kolo Toure released from the club after his contract expired, and Skrtel’s future still insecure, it shouldn’t surprise us if Klopp brings one or two more defenders into the squad, together with his new acquisition Joel Matip.

Mercado’s favorite position, though, is right-back. However, he feels comfortable playing as a centre-back too. This could mean he would be a good back-up for either Nathaniel Clyne or Mamadou Sakho, should he decide to join the club.
