Exciting soccer will return to the Liga MX ‘Superclasico’ when Club Chivas of Guadalajara host Club America this Thursday, May 12, 2016 (7:00 PM Pacific) at the Estadio Chivas for the first-leg of this quarterfinal. This will be the fifth ‘liguilla’ edition of the rivalry since the establishment of the ‘Torneos Cortos’, and the first since the Clausura 2007 semifinals.
Chivas of Guadalajara enters the playoffs under a wonderful momentum and form level. The team coached by Matias Almeyda is undefeated in their last 7 games in which they won 6 and tied one. That streak not only allows the ‘rebaño sagrado’ to join the ‘liguilla’ in good shape, but it also allowed them to jump from the bottom half of the table standings, into 5th place. This Thursday night, Chivas will try to extend that streak into 8 games and earn a valuable victory to take into the Estadio Azteca on Sunday.
Through the first 10 games into the Clausura 2016, one would’ve imagined that the ‘aguilas’ were undoubtedly the favorite to finish the season in a higher position. Many were surprised to see that America only earned 1 more point (29 total) than their arch-rivals who finished with 28. Therefore, while America has home-field advantage in the second leg, there is no true favorite to win this quarterfinal.
This Thursday night’s game will be the fifth playoff edition of the ‘Clasico Nacional’, where if records matter, then America has a good advantage pver Chivas. The ‘aguilas’ have won three of the four previous encounters, and they will try to get a good game in Guadalajara to shoot for their fourth.
The decisive second-leg of this match will be at the Estadio Azteca next Sunday, May 15.
