This week in the Liga MX no other match will be as noteworthy as the ‘Clasico Capitalino‘ between Pumas UNAM and Club America. The game to be played this Sunday, May 8, 2016 (10:00 AM Pacific) at the Ciudad Universitaria will not only be a game between Mexico City rivals, but it could also be UNAM’s last chance to join the playoffs.
Club America enters Sunday’s match with the sole purpose of winning due to two reasons. First, the ‘aguilas’ will participate in next week’s ‘liguilla’ and defeating their rivals prior to those games will be a great momentum boost. The team coached by Ignacio Ambriz currently sits in 2nd place with 28 points but must win to remain in that position in case Leon or Pachuca win their respective games.
The second reason to win is because of the great rivalry exchanged with Pumas. The last time these two teams faced each other was in the Apertura 2015 semifinals which Pumas won, and where Javier Guemez received a gruesome injury.
Pumas of UNAM sits in 10 place after Week 16 with 21 points. The team coached by Guillermo Vazquez has a slight opportunity to reach the playoffs but that is in part out of their hands. Pumas must defeat America, but before that, Cruz Azul and Tigres must tie their game. If those two results happen, then the ‘universitarios’ will join the playoffs as the 8th seed.
