The grand finale of the Copa MX between Veracruz and Necaxa will take place this Wednesday, April 13, 2016 (7:00 PM Pacific) at the Estadio Luis Pirata Fuente. The Clausura 2016 Copa MX will come to its conclusion when the ‘tiburones’ host Necaxa in a match between sides from Liga MX and Ascenso MX.
In the Liga MX Veracruz has been disastrous as they sit in 17th place with the idea of playoffs a distant dream. Their luck has served them differently in the Copa MX as Carlos Reinoso has led his team into the team’s first final since they played in the Ascenso MX years ago. Veracruz the final after finishing 3rd in the group stage seeding with 16 points (4 wins, 1 tie, 1 loss). In the quarterfinals they defeated Pachuca 2-1, and in the semifinals won 3-1 against Atletico San Luis.
Another second division team has reached the final with Necaxa‘s presence. Without taking any merits away from this tournament, it creates doubt as to why first division teams have failed to dominate. Nonetheless, Necaxa is the dark-horse entering this match and are the underdogs as they are (on paper) the weaker side, and the visitors. Necaxa reached the final after ranking in 4th in the group stage with 15 points, defeating Xolos in penalty kicks in the quarterfinals, and Cruz Azul 3-2 in the semifinals.
