Injury update: Schweinsteiger’s absence is a ‘big blow’ for United, says coach Van Gaal

German international and Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger injured his knee in a recent international friendly against England, prompting United manager Louis Van Gaal to call the situation a big blow for the Red Devils campaign. The Dutchman did not provide details as to when the 31 year-old midfielder would be returning.

With just eight fixtures left in Premier League competition, it would take a very quick recovery for Schweinsteiger to make an appearance before the end of the season.

Van Gaal spoke of the loss to United and the German national team, saying, “Schweinsteiger is a tragic injury because the expectation is not so good for him in respect of the European Championship [in the summer], but you never know!” according to United’s official team site.

The German international moved to Old Trafford in July 2015, signing a three-year contract for a transfer fee of £6.5 million. Schweinsteiger managed just 1 goal in 31 appearances this season, but his talent and experience will be missed as United hope to finish strong by winning the FA Cup and securing the final Champions League spot.
