According to ESPN Brazil, Real Madrid are looking to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Wendell. The left back would come in to give Marcelo some competition. They are willing to pay 35 million euros for the Brazilian.
The 22-year-old has played 37 matches this season and has given three assists. As it’s the unwritten law in Brazilian defenders, he’s very attack oriented. Whenever Marcelo gets injured, he would be a natural replacement for him. This season, Nacho, Danilo, Carvajal and Arbeloa have all been forced to play on the left.
Los Blancos aren’t alone in the race for the young defender, as ESPN Brazil reports that Bayer Leverkusen rejected 20 million euros from Paris Saint-Germain. If his form continues to stay at a good level, the club must act fast in the summer, or more contenders could join the fight for his signature.
While money doesn’t seem like an issue for Real Madrid, legal problems are definitely keeping Wendell away from the Santiago Bernabéu. He doesn’t have an European passport, and Casemiro, James and Danilo already occupy the three spots allowed for non-Europeans.
The club may be working to get James the paperwork to free his spot. Even so, Lucas Silva would fill it when he comes back. However, the midfielder would be on the transfer list for the summer, as he has been a major disappointment in Europe and wouldn’t be able to compete with Kroos, Modrić, Kovačić and Casemiro.
Wendell isn’t the only left back that has showed up on Madrid’s wish list. David Alaba and Ricardo Rodríguez, also from the Bundesliga, would also be fine choices. Once the summer starts and the transfer outs happen, we’ll see if this negotiation can become a reality.
