Champions League football returns to Old Trafford Wednesday night when Manchester United host PSV Eindhoven in the second group stage match between the two. United currently leads the group with 7 points, however, second place is Eindhoven with 6, which matches Wolfsburg as well.
The last time these two met back in September, United were on the short end of a 2-1 result in the Netherlands. This was also the match that the Red Devils were dealt a major blow, as Luke Shaw left the match with a broken leg.
With reports that United may be looking to bring in some very well-known wingers during the transfer window, a win here will certainly help the cause to attract world-class talent for their European push.
Goalkeeper: David de Gea
Certainly the first name on Louis van Gaal‘s team sheet, de Gea put in another Man of the Match performance in their win over Watford this past weekend. De Gea will have to keep putting in world-class performances if United are to return to the top of Europe once again.
Right Back: Matteo Darmian
Darmian was somewhat surprisingly benched this past weekend, however, looking back it may have been an extra rest for this upcoming fixture. Ashley Young started in his place and held his own, but Young is certainly much better as a winger than a right back.
Center-Backs: Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo
With Phil Jones an injury doubt, Rojo will move over and show his versatility and be paired with Smalling in front of de Gea. It may be gamble with Rojo, as he struggled against Watford, nonetheless, van Gaal’s hands are tied with the mounting injuries he has to deal with.
Left Back: Ashley Young
As mentioned, Young is much better as a winger, however, United will have to make due with him on the left side of the defence this evening. The left side may be a the lesser of two evils for the Englishman, where he has played better in comparison to the right.
Defensive Midfield: Morgan Schneiderlin and Daley Blind
Whether it be age or injury to Michael Carrick and Bastian Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin has emerged as the most consistent of the defensive midfielder trio. With Carrick injured and Schweinsteiger looking to be rested, it will be the versatile Dutchman filling their shoes. Blind was another who put in a fine performance over the weekend.
Attacking Midfield: Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, and Memphis Depay
Memphis earns his spot back in the starting 11 with a fine display over the weekend, which saw his score the opening goal. His goal was assisted by Ander Herrera, who is a doubt for this clash, which means Memphis will surely be on the team sheet.
With some injuries, Mata returns to his preferred number 10 spot where he will be flanked by speed to his left and right. Mata’s lack of pace is well-known, but his craft and guile will help dictate play in the final third for United.
Striker: Wayne Rooney
United were dealt a huge injury blow when young striker, Anthony Martial, was ruled out with an injury and it appears he may miss this match as well. Rooney also sat out this past weekend with an illness, however, he should be back to lead the line and help United secure all three points.
