Amidst Argentina’s success in the Copa America tournament, defender Ezequiel Garay is becoming a very hot name. Although he just arrived at Zenit Saint Petersburg last season, he is supposedly unhappy in Russia and is eager to move to a bigger club to up his stake with the Argentina National Team.
According to Daily Express, Arsenal have launched a bid for the 28-year-old. The long time Manchester United target would certainly round off Arsenal’s centre backs into a fine squad, already housing Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, and Gabriel Paulista.
Rumors have surfaced of Real Madrid trying to steal Koscielny away, but Arsenal are keen to hold on to their star defender. Those four though would complete a very formidable defensive rotation, something needed to challenge for a league title.
The former Real Madrid man is calm defender who reads the game very well and thrives in breaking up play without throwing himself into clumsy challenges.Garay especially excels when he can be paired with a more aggressive centre back, like Koscielny, as their styles would complement each other.
Mertesacker’s play was questionable at times last season, and although he finished the season strongly, Garay’s competition for the spot would only be a good thing.
Arsene Wenger previously stated that he wasn’t going to go after another defender during this transfer period. But, If he could get a quality defender in Garay for the said asking price of 13 million, he would be foolish to not take that opportunity. It would be a good fit for both parties and push the Gunners that much closer to winning their first Premier League Title since 2004.
