Louis van Gaal desperate to sign Nigel De Jong on a free transfer, during the upcoming summer.
Manchester United may not have been all that convincing this season but they look set to finish in one of the Champions League places due to their good run of form in recent times.
If indeed United do manage to hold on to fourth spot in the table, the current campaign can be construed as a fairly successful one for the Red Devils but there is no hiding behind the fact that they will need to strengthen their squad ahead of next season.
Reinforcing the backline will be on the agenda for United but a new defensive midfielder also looks necessary for the Red Devils and Nigel De Jong is one name which has been incessantly linked with the Old Trafford outfit over the last few months.
The links are understandable as van Gaal has previously worked very closely with De Jong in the Dutch national team and with United in need of a midfield hard man; the 30-year old has been seen as an ideal signing for the Red Devils.
Now in a further development to the story, it has been claimed by the Metro that van Gaal is intent on signing De Jong during the upcoming summer and will be pulling all the stops in order to land the Dutch international.
United have been encouraged by the fact that De Jong will be available on a free transfer after the midfielder refused to sign an extension to his deal at AC Milan which expires at the end of the current campaign and there is a huge possibility that his transfer to Old Trafford could come into fruition.
