Manchester United and Chelsea to battle it out for unsettled midfield general

January is just a little more than a week out from being over and Louis van Gaal and Manchester United have yet to make an impression on the transfer window.

Nonetheless, according to reports from the Daily StarLuka Modric has emerged as the United’s top target as he is keen on a move away from Real Madrid. While Modric has thrived since arriving at the Bernabeu, it is said that his wife is unsettled in Madrid and he is looking for a move back to England as a result.

While it is obvious that United are in need for some defensive cover, they also lack a real playmaker with the type of engine and determination of Modric, aside from jack-of-all-trades Wayne Rooney.

Since joining Real Madrid in 2012 from Tottenham, Modric has been the heart of the midfield. He can play in different roles in the midfield, making him very versatile. United have tried to bring in play-makers like Juan Mata, Marouane Fellaini, and Ander Herrera, none of which have turned into Modric-like forces for the Red Devils.

Jose Mourinho and Chelsea are also apparently in the market for Modric’s signature. They have less of a need at the position than United do, harboring Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic in similar roles.

Nonetheless, the addition to Modric to any team would certainly be a wonderful thing. With the futures of Mikel, Ramires, and other midfielders uncertain, Mourinho is looking to solidify a move for the future with Modric. Van Gaal would be keen to monitor the situation closely.

With the little Croatian set for a move back to England and the Premier League, there will surely be a battle for his signature. Manchester United are just a few pieces away from being a serious threat for title contention, and Modric would take them to that next level.

Since arriving, fellow ex-teammate Angel Di Maria has thrived in Manchester, and would hugely benefit from a play-maker and familiar face like Modric lined up next to him.
