Manchester United’s wonderful unbeaten run in the past few weeks has seen the Red Devils strengthen their grip in third place in the Premier League table and as a testament to the level of optimism surrounding the club, there have even been murmurs that the English giants could potentially gatecrash the party Manchester City and Chelsea are enjoying at the top of the table by challenging for the title.
Before anyone can get carried away though, it has to be stated that finishing in the top four has always been the ambition for the Red Devils this season and manager Louis van Gaal is refusing to get drawn into discussions about whether or not his side can launch an unexpected onslaught for the title.
With things so tightly packed in the table, United are not confirmed of a place in the Champions League as of yet and there are still a couple of areas in which van Gaal can improve his side, from now till the end of the season.
The shaky backline is clearly Manchester United’s biggest weakness at the moment and a new central defender is all but certain to arrive at Old Trafford in the near future. Recently, there has also been speculation that United will look to sign a new right sided defender – especially with van Gaal deploying a 5-3-2 system.
Antonio Valencia has usually been deployed in the wing back position this season but van Gaal is said to be looking at a traditional right back and reports emerging out of England have now claimed that the Dutch manager is looking to make an ambitious swoop to sign Everton star Seamus Coleman.
Coleman has arguably been the best right back in the Premier League over the last two years and United had been linked with a swoop for the Welshman last season. However, United’s struggles allied by Everton’s fine form meant that Coleman decided to stay put at Goodison Park.
The tables seem to have turned during the current campaign and with Everton struggling and United challenging for a top four finish, it looks like Coleman could finally be open to making a move to Old Trafford.
Everton most certainly would not want to part with their prized asset but it has been claimed that United are looking to tempt the Toffees to sell the right back by tabling a whopping £25million offer and as a sweetner to the deal, the Red Devils are also willing to allow young Adnan Januzaj to join the Merseyside club on loan till the end of the season.
