Following their 2-1 victory over Arsenal last night, Manchester United sensationally find themselves in the dizzy heights of fourth place in the Premier League and the sense of optimism seems to have finally returned to the club after 18 months of doom and gloom.
Despite the victory though, it has to be said that United could and probably should have come out of the game without anything – if only it were not for Arsenal’s poor finishing allied by David De Gea’s brilliance.
Therefore, the victory over Arsenal does not take away from the fact that the United defence needs sorting out and although the likes of Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett are promising youngsters – they are susceptible to making mistakes as the duo are still learning their trade.
Pepe on Arsenal’s radar
So it is very important that Manchester United need reinforcements at the back and perhaps as a result, a host of names incessantly keep getting linked with the Red Devils.
Now according to reports, it has emerged that United are planning a shock swoop to sign Real Madrid defender Pepe.
It is believed that Pepe is set to be relegated to second choice centre back at Real Madrid as manager Carlo Ancelotti wants to form the foundation of his side at the back with Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane.
Pepe would be a good addition to the ranks of United
While Ancelotti would be open to keeping hold of Pepe, the Italian manager would not hesitate to offload the Portuguese international if a good offer comes along and with the defender seemingly being made available – United manager Louis van Gaal is hoping to lure the 31-year old to Old Trafford.
Pepe may not be exactly the long term solution at the back which United fans are hoping for but there is no doubting that the Portuguese international is a top class defender and he would certainly help plug the gaps in the gaping Red Devils’ backline.
