The Club Leon vs Club America Liga MX match will take place this Saturday, July 19, 2014 (6:00 PM Pacific) at the Estadio Nou Camp. After an exciting 2014 World Cup, it is now time to move back to soccer at the club level. In one of the must-watch games of Week 1, the reigning champions Club Leon will be facing 2013 Clausura champion Club America. Coming off of a “bicampeonato” (meaning that they became champions two times in a row), Club Leon will have to prove that they are rightfully deserving off such a title. After coming off of a successful Clausura tournament, Club Leon will once again look to make a strong appearance in the Apertura 2014. In the 2014 Clausura, Leon entered the elimination phase of the tournament in eight place. Incredibly, the worked their way to the final by beating Cruz Azul and Toluca. In the final they managed to beat Pachuca to claim their bicampeonato. Overall, the road to the final wasn’t that easy for the ‘fiera’ but they proved they are still the strongest team in the Liga MX.
During the summer, the team coached by Gustavo Matosas managed to get the forward Martin Bravo from UNAM in exchange for Matias Britos. Although not a major acquisition, Martin Bravo will surely improve Leon’s attacking force. Unfortunately, one of their most important players, Luis Montes, had a double fracture in one of his pre-world cup friendlies with Mexico against Ecuador. He was not able to participate in the 2014 World Cup and Club Leon will miss him.
Club America Team News
Facing Leon will be Club America who have managed to be a consistent threat in the Liga MX. Although they did not get too far in the Clausura 2014, America have recently been a challenge for many Mexican teams. Many Club America players were in El Tri for the World Cup and it is likely that the form they had in Brazil will carry on to this tournament. With the stellar arrival of Oribe Peralta from Santos Laguna, America will have a bolstered attack that could aid them in contending for the 2014 Apertura title. In contrast, they let go of Fransisco “Maza” Rodriguez and Juan Carlos Medina. Fellow coach Antonio “El Turco” Mohamed is seeking to lead Club America to a successful campaign this year.

The upcoming match between Leon and America will be a good match where Club Leon will most likely play defensive-minded football. Club America will likely play with a good rhythm constantly attacking and pressuring Leon’s defense. After what may be a good game between two of Mexico’s biggest soccer teams, America will end up defeating Club Leon 1-0. The absence of Luis Montes will hurt Leon and Rafael Marquez will do whatever he can to maintain his team composed.
