The Tigres UANL vs Xolos Tijuana Liga MX match will take place this Saturday, April 12, 2014 (5:00 PM Pacific) at the Estadio Universitario. Tigres and Xolos face-off in one of the best matches of Week 14 during this Clausura 2014 where each team enters the game in opposite morale. While Xolos suffered CONCACAF Champions League elimination amid in field violence last Wednesday, Tigres is still celebrating their Copa MX championship.
The team coached by Ricardo Ferretti gained a much needed morale push this past Wednesday wen they defeated Alebrijes de Oaxaca to win the Claurusura 2014 Copa MX. With that win Tigres enters Saturday’s game against Tijuana with a lot of confidence to win another game. Entering Week 15, the ‘felinos’ are in 14th place with 17 points. Although they are out of a playoff seed, a win will take them to 20 points and will have then within reach of the ‘liguilla’ in the final two weeks of the season. Unfortunately for them, a tie or a loss will make it very difficult to finish within the top eight.
Xolos of Tijuana was involved in one of the most controversial stories of this 2014 campaign. In their semifinal loss to Cruz Azul in the Concachampions, players like Hernan Pellerano, and Javier Gandolfi, plus the coach Cesar Farias, were the focal points in the post-match brawl. Since Wednesday, eyes have turned towards Club Tijuana where many have argued the team’s anti-fair play, and have even raised the idea of suspending certain characters for their controversial actions.
Since the brawl took place in the CCL, that means that Xolos should not, and will not have any suspensions in the Liga MX. However, they must visit the difficult Estadio Universitario with a damaged morale, and with their negative record of no away Liga MX wins since April 2013. Furthermore, they will play without the Pellerano brothers, which are instrumental to the team’s tactics. Cristian Pellerano was hurt last weekend in the win against Toluca, while Hernan Pellerano is suspended due to card accumulation.
