Both teams need the win, Chivas to remain in the playoff spots, and Atlas to distance itself from relegation. Of course, honor and pride are at stake, as these two teams dispute the bi-annual Guadalajara derby.
Atlas has been unable to win at home yet this season, under Tomas Boy, the team has found the wins away, but has struggled in the cavernous Estadio Jalisco. Atlas fans would be delighted to end the home win-less streak by defeating Chivas.
Of main importance for Atlas though, above winning the Clasico Tapatio, or even getting into the Liga MX playoffs (which they still have a decent shot of) is earning enough points to remain in the Liga MX. Atlante is fighting back, and is trying its best to avoid relegation, while Puebla and Veracruz have joined the mix in the relegation battle. Atlas, above all, needs to at least to get a point.
Chivas have been solid this season, if unspectacular. Coach Jose Luis Real has been able to create a solid team that focuses on defending, scoring only rarely. Chivas has allowed just nine goals through 11 games, though they have the fourth worst offense, with just eight goals scored.
Chivas currently sit in 9th place with 16 points, a win over Atlas would place them in the playoff spots. However, they will be facing Atlas, a squad that will attempt to at least secure a point at any cost.
In terms of absences, Atlas will be missing two players, Leandro Cufre is out with an injury, while Sergio Amaury Ponce will be absent serving a suspension. For Chivas, Omar Bravo will be out with an injury. Bravo is the leading scorer for Chivas (3), his absence will surely hinder Chivas’ already anemic offense.

Chivas is a team that defends well, but struggles to score, while Atlas is a modest squad that is simply concerned with grinding out one point at a time. This edition of the Chivas vs Atlas Clasico Tapatio will end in a 2-2 draw, as there simply isn’t enough to separate these two teams.
