When Tom Cleverley burst into the scene for Manchester United, the midfielder was heralded as the ‘English-Xavi’ but a couple of seasons on, the English public now seem to be angered by the mere sight of the 24-year old in an England jersey.
Despite being widely lambasted during the current campaign for his sub-par performances with Manchester United, England manager Roy Hodgson persisted in selecting the midfielder for the Three Lions’ upcoming friendly match against Denmark over arguably a couple of more deserving candidates such as Tom Huddlestone, Gareth Barry, Jake Livermore among others, and it certainly has angered majority of the England fans.
One particular England fan from Blackpool, Glenn McConnell, was so incensed with Hodgson’s decision that he set up a petition to ban Cleverley from playing for England in the upcoming World Cup and the petition proved to be such a hit that it had received more than 8,500 signatures as of Saturday afternoon.
The petition read, “Tom Cleverley, owner of 13 England caps, six more than Ross Barkley, Adam Lallana and Leon Osman combined, has been regularly selected by Roy Hodgson in his squads without possessing any genuine qualities whatsoever.
“We believe for the reputation of this proud footballing nation that he should be prevented from participating in this summer’s international showcase.
“Whilst England are considered to disappoint at major tournaments, further embarrassment could be avoided by not having his inept performances undermine the rest of the team’s efforts.”
Admittedly, Cleverley has been very poor this season, but such a show of discontent by the fans towards the young man certainly seems a step too far by England fans. After all, it is not Cleverley’s fault that he got selected for the National Team.
That being said though, the midfielder certainly needs to roll up his sleeve and prove to everyone that he is worthy of donning the famous Three Lions jersey at the World Cup .
What do you think? Is Tom Cleverley not good enough for England OR Is he being unfairly treated by the fans?
