The Leon vs Flamengo Copa Libertadores match will take place this Wednesday, February 12, 2014 (4:00 PM Pacific) at the Estadio Nou Camp.  The ‘Panzas Verdes’ and the ‘Rubro-Negro’ will face-off in the most attractive match of the second day of the group stages.  Leon (Mexico) and Flamengo (Brazil), will begin a difficult process in Group 7 where both are favorites to qualify into the next round.  The other teams in the group are Emelec (ECU), and Bolivar (BOL).

The ‘Esmeraldas’ are ready to begin their participation in the 2014 edition of the most prestigious tournament in the Americas.  As part of Group 7, the team coached by Gustavo Matosas is considered as one of the two teams favored to qualify into the the knock-out stages.  The ‘Panzas Verdes‘ are a talented team with top players like Rafa Marquez, Luis Montes, Carlos Peña, and Mauro Boselli which creates this team into one of the strongest title contenders of the competition.

The issue with Leon, is that although they won the Apertura 2013 almost two months ago, their form at the start of this season has been far below average. In fact, during the 2013 Libertadores, Leon had also just finished the Apertura 2012 in good manner (semifinals), but were quickly eliminated in the pre-groups knock out stage.  This time around Matosas must pressure his team to return to the incredible form shown last season, in order at having a chance at creating history for Mexican clubs at the Libertadores.

Like Leon, Flamengo is also favored to qualify out of the group, as they posses a highly competitive and talented squad.  The team coached by Jaime de Almeida has top players like Frickson Erazo, Elano, Lucas Mugni, and Hernane who can lead this team to great lenghts at this competition.  Currently, Flamengo has not begun playing at the Brasileirao, but they have stayed in form as the Campeonato Carioca is currently taking place.  The Mengao is tied for first place in that cup, although during the weekend they lost against their top rivals, Fluminense, 3-0.

Leon vs Flamengo Prediction

The Leon vs Flamengo match will be intense, and undoubtedly a must-watch game.  While Leon entered the Libertadores after winning the Apertura 2013 of the Liga MX in outstanding fashion, they have failed to reach top form at the start of their Clausura 2014 season.  They will have to fight against that weak form, as Leon’s biggest goal this semester will be to go deep into the Libertadores.

On the other hand, the Brazilian league has not begun, although Flamengo has been participating in their state’s tournament; the Campeonato Carioca. Although the competitiveness in the state cup is not the same as that of the Brasileirao, Flamengo will be in good form to play in a difficult stadium like the Nou Camp.  In a great game, the Leon vs Flamengo match will end in a 2-2 tie.
