The team coached by Jose Manuel ‘Chepo’ De La Torre is in need of improvement.  They won their past two matches, but they have not been the dominant force fans are used to seeing from ‘El Tri’ in Gold Cups.  Mexico will be the favorite to defeat Trinidad and Tobago, and will also be the favorite to defeat the winner of the Panama vs Cuba match.  Saturday’s match is important in that Mexico has to keep improving as they will need to be in their best form if they want to reach the final, and against the United States.

Mexico has improved slightly game-after-game in this year’s Gold Cup.  The ‘B’ squad has had good performances by Marco Fabian and Luis Montes providing the offense with good scoring opportunities.  The bad side of this team has been its defense, where there has been many mistakes that were it not for the opponents’ poor scoring abilities, Mexico would have received many goals.  On Saturday, Mexico will need to prevent those defensive mistakes from happening, as there can be no more mishaps if they want to go deep in the tournament.

Trinidad & Tobago reached the quarterfinals by defeating Honduras 2-0 in the last match of Group B. This victory over the Central American side allowed Trinidad & Tobago to move up to the second spot. Nonetheless, the Caribbean squad did not play very well in its group matches. It started off with a 2-2 draw against El Salvador, then lost 2-0 against CONCACAF minnow Haiti. The victory over Honduras was the only positive result in the group stage. Trinidad & Tobago will have an extremely difficult challenge in Mexico.
