The Xolos of Tijuana are a step away from the Round of 16 after their outstanding performance Wednesday in the Copa Libertadores 2013. In front of an Estadio Caliente at full capacity, Xolos was able to dominate the reigning Libertadores and world champions, Corinthians, to a 1-0 win.
As the most anticipated match by the Mexican fans, Tijuana was ready to support its team in a very important match, as was Corinthians. The stadium was in a great atmosphere throughout the game, but it was not until the 2nd half in which the fans began to really make a difference. At times, it seemed as if the referee was making all the wrong calls in favor of Corinthians, prompting the ‘xolofanatics’ to create real pressure on the officials. It was at that moment in which Club Tijuana scored the only goal in the 1-0 win with a back heel of captain Javier Gandolfi.
After a corner kick, it is questionable if there was an offside on the play, causing Brazilians all around to argue that the goal should have been disqualified. Nonetheless, the 50-50 play resulted in favor of Tijuana, and it allowed the home squad to win their 3rd out of 3 games possible to begin the Copa Libertadores.
After 3 games, Xolos leads Group 5 with 9 points, and Corinthians is a far 2nd with 4 points. Next Wednesday the team from Sao Paulo can obtain revenge as these two sides will meet in Brazil. As for now though, Xolos has won 3 in a row, they still have not received a goal, they were the superior and dominant team on Wednesday, and they are a real title contender.
