Cruz Azul Femenil and head coach Raúl ‘Potro’ Gutiérrez have parted ways by mutual agreement, the club announced late on Friday, October 16. Joaquín Moreno takes over the first team immediately as interim head coach.
In its statement, the club said the Direccion Deportiva Femenil and Gutiérrez had decided to end his spell in charge of the first team. Both sides agreed the current context was complex for the development of the project, and that the best alternative was to move to an interim setup.
Gutiérrez took charge in late August, on a deal announced as running through the Clausura 2027, after a turbulent start to the Apertura 2026. A 10-0 loss to Club America in Jornada 2 cost Israel del Real his job, and Guadalupe Worbis covered two matches as interim before Gutiérrez arrived.
His six matches brought three wins and three losses.
On Saturday, October 10, during Club America’s match against Monterrey, Gutiérrez took part in a homage to former America players marking the club’s 110th anniversary. He appeared on the pitch wearing a commemorative America shirt.
Gutiérrez played for America in the 1990s and won a title there, but images of the Cruz Azul Femenil coach in the shirt of the club’s biggest rival angered supporters, and fans called for his exit.
On Monday, October 12, Gutiérrez apologized in a public statement. He said he had not measured the impact of taking part in the recognition, and he compared the feeling to scoring an own goal.
The apology did not close the case. Four days later, his exit was official, less than two months after his appointment and six days after the homage.
It is the second Gutiérrez spell at Cruz Azul to end early. He coached the men’s team from August 2022 to February 2023, when the club dismissed him five matches into the Clausura 2023. Gutiérrez remains best known in Mexican soccer for coaching Mexico to the Under-17 World Cup title in 2011.
Moreno’s first match in charge comes on Saturday, October 17, when Cruz Azul Femenil visits Monterrey in Jornada 11. The club has not announced a timeline for a permanent appointment. For continuing coverage, see FutnSoccer’s Liga MX hub.
