The 2018 Apertura edition of the “Clasico Tapatio” will be played this Friday, August 24, 2018, at the Estadio Jalisco. The battle for the pride of the city of Guadalajara always provides an intense clash, but despite the rivalry, there have been several players that have played for both teams, here are five.
Oswaldo Sanchez
The Mexican goalkeeper is a legend in Mexican football for the national team, Santos Laguna and Chivas de Guadalajara, but is a product of Atlas’ youth academy. “San Oswaldo” started off his career with Los Zorros in 1993 and did have 81 appearances with the team. With Chivas, Sanchez had 272 appearances from 1999-2006 and enjoyed a league title in 2006 Apertura as the team captain.
Jared Borgetti
Borgetti is another player that reached legendary status at Santos Laguna on this list as he scored over 200 goals with the team. “El Zorro del Desierto” is a product of Atlas’ youth academy, having started his professional career in 1994. Borgetti had an uneventful stint with Chivas in 2009, scoring no goals in just seven league appearances in the Apertura competition.
Omar Bravo
Bravo scored over 120 goals with Chivas de Guadalajara in three different stints with the club, but that did not stop him from celebrating a goal against Chivas in an Atlas jersey back in 2012. Bravo’s time with Los Rojinegros was short-lived, but he enjoyed success with 13 league goals in 2013, but he will always be remembered as a legend for Los Rojiblancos.
Sergio Santana
Santana played with several different clubs during his extensive 17-year career, but will be remembered dearly by Chivas’ fans. The Zacatecas native was a key player in Chivas’ 2006 Apertura championship team serving as a key player off the bench for Jose Manuel De La Torre. Santana then became a consistent starter and scored 24 goals in over 100 appearances with the team from 2006-2008. The former Mexico international went on to play with Atlas in 2012, but his form was abysmal with no goals in 29 Liga MX games.
Adalberto “Dumbo” Lopez
Leon’s all-time goal scorer was also a key member of Atlas’ only league championship team in the 1950-1951 season. “Dumbo” also played with Chivas later on his career and won a goalscoring title and reached a league final.
