This Sunday, August 12, Chivas de Guadalajara hosted Santos Laguna at the Estadio Akron for a game in the fourth round of matches in the Liga MX 2018 Apertura. Both teams were going into the game with a plethora of problems so it was set to be a close and intense encounter.
Chivas had been unimpressive in this tournament and inclusively had to play this game without Orbelin Pineda due to a red card and Alan Pulido due to an injury. Santos Laguna had just lost their manager Robert Siboldi after a reported altercation with Uruguayan defender Gerardo Alcoba.
Salvador Reyes Jr. was now the manager of the team and was looking for a good start with the current Liga MX champions. He did just that and came away with a 2-1 win at the Estadio Akron against his hometown team and the team where he had once played for.
Chivas started off the encounter with an early lead in the 25th minute with a goal by Isaac Brizuela. However, the home team failed to maintain the lead as Los Guerreros tied the game before the end of the first half in the 40th minute with a goal by Brazilian defender Matheus Doria.
The game then stayed quiet until the 77th minute where Jonathan Rodriguez scored the goal that would lead to Santos’ victory in Guadalajara. The Celestial Warriors came away with the three points from the match and improved to nine points on the young season.
Chivas, on the other hand, is now nearing a state of emergency and only has one point in its first four games of the season. If Los Rojiblancos continue to struggle it should not be long until Jose Cardozo is relieved of his duties as the team is showing no signs of progress from last season.
