Winger reveals that he came close to leave Everton in August

Aaron Lennon has admitted that he came close to leaving Everton in August. Lennon eventually left the Toffees to join Burnley last month and it was also reported that he could join the Clarets during the summer.

“I think it was the right time for me to move,” he said. “It was very close in August. It nearly happened but we just couldn’t get it over the line.

“I was really happy that the gaffer [Sean Dyche] came back for me. Thankfully it all went through and I’m really excited to be here.”

Lennon had spent the past three seasons at Goodison Park but only played 11 games this season.

Following the arrival of Theo Walcott from Arsenal last month for £20 million, it became clear that Lennon would not form part of Sam Allardyce’s future first team plans and he was allowed to leave the club.

He went on to make his first start for the Clarets during the 1-1 draw against Manchester City last weekend.
