The Sport Review have transmitted the words of the Arsenal legend, Paul Merson, who believes that Liverpool have had a successful winter transfer window, despite missing to replace Philippe Coutinho.
The Reds have brought highly-rated defender Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton for a record-fee of 75 million on the first day of January.
However, Coutinho left the Anfield to join Barcelona, and the club failed to find a top-class forward to help Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino in the attack. Additionally, West Bromwich Albion have signed Daniel Sturridge which narrowed Liverpool’s offensive opinions to Dominic Solanke and Danny Ings.
However, Merson hailed Jurgen Klopp’s decision not to waste a huge amount of money, and instead reinforce his shaky backline.
He said, “It’s been a brilliant window. They needed a centre-half and they paid good money and got him. They also got £146m for Coutinho and got a big earner in Daniel Sturridge off the wage bill. It’s been good business in my opinion. Top marks.”
Thomas Lemar seemed close to joining the Merseyside club, but Klopp refused to meet Monaco’s £90 million asking price, which only frustrated the fans, who expected their club to reinvest part of the £146 million they’ve received from Coutinho’s sale.
