Alan Shearer has said that the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona could present a big risk for Liverpool.
The Brazilian officially completed his switch from Liverpool to the Camp Nou on Sunday for a fee believed to be in the region of £145 million and Liverpool fans now want that money to be invested into the playing squad.
The Merseyside club have already signed Virgil Van Dijk this month and in light of the sale of Coutinho, adding a new winger or midfielder to the squad is of paramount importance if they would like to enjoy a good season.
Shearer has warned Liverpool that they might have sold Coutinho at the wrong time, with Champions League football being far from secured.
He said: “It is a hell of a lot of money but transfer fees have gone up by about 25 per cent since Neymar’s move to Paris Saint-Germain last summer. And while Liverpool now have the cash in the bank, selling Coutinho could cost them millions more if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.”
