Liverpool reportedly handed blow in hopes of signing top target

According to Bookies BetStars, Liverpool have been overtaken by Manchester City in the race to sign Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk.

Though he has been unable to hit top form this season, Van Diyk is widely regarded as being one of the best defenders in the Premier League and he was strongly linked with a move to Liverpool during the summer, though at the end the Saints refused to sell.

Liverpool’s defensive woes have continued to haunt them this season and they still remain interested in luring Van Dijk in order to bolster their backline, however it now appears that City has overtaken them in the race to sign the player.

Director of Trading Ian Marmion said: “Wantaway Southampton defender, Virgil van Dijk is looking increasingly more likely to leave St Mary’s in January as host of clubs have ramped up their attempts to seal the Dutchman’s signature.

“Manchester City have leapfrogged Liverpool in the race to sign the centre-back and are now the outright favourites at 15/8 as they look to strengthen their defensive back-line in the looming transfer window.”
