Everton star Wayne Rooney feels that referee Craig Pawson was right to award his side a penalty which earned them a 1-1 draw against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby on Saturday.
Liverpool were on top for most of the game and took the lead during the first half after Mohamed Salah found the back of the net.
With just 13 minutes remaining, Dejan Lovren was adjudged to have brought down Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the box and Rooney made no mistake in converting from the spot.
The decision to award the penalty was however controversial and met with mixed responses.
Rooney however feels that the ref made the correct decision. “I had to keep myself composed. Lovren kicked the ball away and that gave me time,” the former Manchester United star told Sky Sports after the final whistle.
“I knew where I was going. I practised yesterday and thankfully I caught it right. It looked a clear penalty. He pushed him over and the ref has made the right decision.”
