Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted that his side deserved to lose as they went down 1 -0 to Belgian club Anderlecht in their final Champions League game on Tuesday.
“The best team won, they were better than us,” Rodgers said.
“The context of the game probably affected our performance, especially in the first half. Them having to chase the game, they played much quicker and we were poor in our ball possession. I was thankful to get in 0-0 at half time and second half we were better.
“I don’t think we were spooked, we just weren’t very good. They were brighter technically, their movement was sharper.”
Despite tasting defeat, the Hoops still finish their group in third place and drop to the Europa League as Anderlecht needed to win the game by four clear goals in order to overtake Celtic and win a place in Europe’s second tier club competition.
After dominating Scottish football since he has been in charge, Celtic have failed to impress in Europe.
Rodgers will have no excuses should his side fail to have a deep run in the Europa League as they will not be competing against clubs with the same level of quality as the likes of PSG and Bayern Munich.
