As per Jornal de Noticias (via DailyMail), Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas has emerged as a January transfer target for Newcastle.

Manager Rafa Benitez wants a top shotstopper in order to boost his side’s Premier League safety chances, and he reckons the triple Champions League winner would be a good option.

Casillas, 36, has found himself on the bench at the Portuguese club of recent, last seeing action in the 0-0 draw against Sporting Lisbon on October 1.

The World Cup and European Championship winner will definitely be an upgrade on Toons duo Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot, but Newcastle aren’t willing to meet his £95,000-per-week wages.

The club targeted Chelsea’s Willy Caballero and Napoli’s Pepe Reina in the summer, but failure to land them saw England youth international Freddie Woodman remain at the club.

A new signing in January will allow Benitez send the youngster on a much-needed loan in order for his development to continue.

While the experience of Casillas will definitely come handy, his wages remain a stumbling block and Newcastle could be forced to look elsewhere.
