TalkSport pundit Alan Brazil has claimed that Newcastle United billionaire owner Mike Ashley is keen on returning to a role at Rangers as he now has firm interest.
Ashley has received a £300million bid from Amanda Staveley’s Middle East-backed PCP Capital Partners consortium, but he’s still bent on selling Newcastle for £400million, hence it could take some more time before any sale is agreed.
The former whistleblower isn’t popular amongst the Rangers supporters and the board, with the club paying £3million to buy out his involvement in June.
Nevertheless, the financial shortcomings that have seen Celtic become all the more unbeatable could make Ashley’s return a perfect reunion for the Light Blues.
Brazil wrote in his The Sunday Post column: “I can’t help but wonder whether Ashley might be ready to have another look at Rangers if he manages to punt Newcastle United.
“That’s something Mike has been trying to do on and off for years, and now he has firm interest.
“If everything goes smoothly and Ashley pockets a tidy sum, it honestly wouldn’t shock me if he reappeared at Ibrox.”
Rangers will no doubt need plenty of cash in the months ahead, with recruiting a new manager, backroom staff and players in subsequent transfer windows top of the agenda.
Having Ashley back at Glasgow seems like a great idea, but it remains to be seen if that will be happening anytime soon.
