Gini Wijnaldum has admitted that he had never played in defense prior to Liverpool’s 5-1 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp made a number of changes to his squad for the game which included playing Wijnaldum and midfielder Emre Can alongside Dejan Lovren in defence.
Despite using Liverpool using players out of position, Liverpool ended up winning the game convincingly.
Roberto Firmino scored a brace while Emre Can and Philippe Coutinho as well as an own goal from Brighton completed the rout.
Whilst talking about the experience of having to play as a centre back, Wijnaldum said, “We were training a day before the game, [Klopp] didn’t tell me, he just picked the team and he told me I was at the back.
“He picked the first XI and told I me I was at the back. Normally I am a player who can play in different positions, but never in defence.
“The manager was running out of options and he picked me and Emre. It was really hard in the first because I didn’t know what to do every time.”
