The Chronicle has revealed that Newcastle youngster Alex Gilliead is wanted by Sunderland, Hull City and Millwall ahead of the January transfer window.
The 21-year-old forward is currently impressing on loan at League One side Bradford City, where he has featured in 18 out of 20 league games played thus far.
Gilliead is looking to move a step up the divisions by January when his loan ends, and with little funds available for Black Cats new manager Chris Coleman to spend, loan deals are his best bets.
With relegation staring them in the face, Sunderland could do with Newcastle’s help as regards having Gilliead until the end of the season, but the bitter rivalry between them could hinder their chance.
However, the eternal rivalry aside, it could be a win-win for both managers and player.
Toons boss Rafa Benitez is only keen for the young winger to have some experience under his belt, and one better in quality can be gathered in the Championship.
Bradford also want to keep the England youth international until the end of the season to boost their promotion chances, but Gilliead has the final say.
With his quality and confidence, the winger can sure prove himself in the Championship and stake a claim to a starting berth at Sunderland.
Who knows if a stint under Coleman could even see him force Newcastle into recalling him next season?
