Joey Barton believes that Everton should have approached David Moyes about their vacant managerial position.

Moyes was previously manager of the Toffees between 2002 and 2013 and was largely praised for the work that he did while in charge of the club which included famously leading the Merseyside club to Champions League qualification.

Moyes ended up being appointed as manager of West Ham earlier on during the month replacing the sacked Slaven Bilic.

Everton meanwhile are still without a manager since sacking Ronald Koeman six weeks ago, though it looks like they are going to appoint Sam Allardyce.

Barton said on The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Monday morning, “I honestly believe Everton have missed the trick by not… David showed that he was prepared to go in and work in the short term to prove himself again.

“How Everton haven’t gone in and got David Moyes just to cover the gap between Koeman and whoever it is they want to appoint.

“I think if Everton are serious about staying up, they need to get on the phone to like a Tony Pulis,” added Barton. Brendan Rodgers, they haven’t picked the phone up to.”
