Newcastle transfer boost as West Brom woes make them favorites to sign defender

As per earlier reports, Newcastle are keen on £7 million-rated Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Conor Coady ahead of the January transfer window.

However, West Brom also registered interest as erstwhile manager Tony Pulis wanted the centre-back.

With the Welshman now gone, it’s very unlikely that his transfer plans still hold weight at the Hawthorns.

The development means Newcastle now have a greater chance of landing their man with their greatest hurdle for his signature out of the way.

Coady, despite impressing with the Wolves since last term, particularly caught eyes during the Championship’s side League Cup’s 0-0 regulation-time stalemate with Manchester City last month.

The 24-year-old was a great prospect of the Liverpool youth team when Magpies boss Rafa Benitez was at the Merseyside club, hence a reunion can’t be ruled out if Wolves can be convinced into selling.

Coady’s versatility – as he’s primarily a defensive midfielder – is a quality Newcastle can do with, but it remains to be seen if Wolves will be keen on letting one of their most important players leave midway through a very promising campaign.
