Retired forward Michael Owen has expressed surprise over the longevity of his record of being the most expensive transfer fee Newcastle United have paid for a single player.
Owen moved from Real Madrid to Newcastle for a fee of around £16million in 2006, which was then the record fee the Magpies had paid for a single player and interestingly enough, that record hasn’t been broken a decade later.
Even in an era when players are being sold and bought for ridiculous fee, this transfer record remaining intact at Newcastle has certainly surprised Owen.
The former England international expressed his surprise on the aforementioned subject in a recent interview before adding that he expects this to change soon.
Owen told the Chronicle, “In this day and age – yes. My transfer fee looks pretty small compared to what people are going for nowadays.
“I would be very surprised if that record isn’t broken in the next window or two. I will be surprised if I still have that honour! Football is changing by the year.
“I thought I was in the game at a good time when football couldn’t peak anymore in terms of popularity. But it’s just going through the roof year on year. And that record will certainly be beaten very, very soon.”
Newcastle have been linked with many players who are valued at over£16million in recent years and it might be matter of time before Owen’s record is broken by the Magpies – especially if the stingy owner Mike Ashley leaves the club.
