Chris Waddle has claimed that Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey should be recalled to the England national team.
The Three Lions secured their qualification by defeating Slovenia 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier on Thursday though their performance was less than impressive especially in midfield.
Waddle pointed out that Gareth Southgate’s men need additional reinforcements in the middle of the park and he believes that Shelvey could be a solution to the problems.
Shelvey impressed during the Magpies 1-1 draw against Liverpool last weekend and earned the last of his six England caps in 2015.
Waddle believes that he needs to be reintroduced to the national team setup, saying, “People knock me down when I say it, but Jonjo Shelvey is the best I’ve seen at passing the ball at distance, but he won’t get in the squad for reasons we don’t know.
“Performances over the last two or three games are not good enough to do well in Russia. There is a lot of work to be done. We definitely need to find a quality midfield player who has got a range of passing which can help this side. Going forward, I don’t think England are too bad, but they need supply.”
