Liverpool wanted World Cup winner to replace Coutinho this summer

According to reports from Germany, Liverpool were targeting Bayern Munich star Thomas Mueller to replace Philippe Coutinho if the Brazilian ended up joining Barcelona.

Coutinho had been strongly linked with a move to the Catalan giants during the summer, who reportedly viewed him as a replacement for Neymar after the Brazilian joined PSG in a world record deal.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was also said to be prepared to sanction a sale if he could secure the services of Mueller.

However, the 2014 World Cup winner wished to remain with the German giants and this led to the Reds outright refusing to listen to offers for Coutinho.

Barcelona eventually opted to sign alternative targets and secured the services of Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund instead.

In what will be a blow to the Spanish giants, Dembele is set to be out of action for three and a half months due to a hamstring injury.
