Football pundit Steve Nicol has said that Joe Gomez will not help Liverpool solve their defensive problems.
Jurgen Klopp opted to make eight changes to his side that faced off against Leicester City in a Carabao Cup encounter on Tuesday and utilized Gomez in defence alongside Ragnar Klavan.
The Reds went on to suffer a disappointing loss as Shinji Okazaki and Islam Slimani scored to secure a 2-0 win for the Foxes and their defensive woes were once again exposed.
Despite having been touted as a potential star for the future, Nicol is not convinced that Gomez has what it takes to be a long-term defensive option for Liverpool.
He said, “The one thing I wanted to see was Joe Gomez at centre-back because there is no question that’s where Liverpool’s problem is, but unfortunately he failed.
“He was involved in a couple of the goals, if he made better decisions they could’ve been avoided, so right now I’m scoring him off the list.”
