Michael Owen explains why Newcastle could fall short

Michael Owen has revealed that he has been impressed by the way in which Newcastle are currently playing in the Premiership but did add that he feels that the club’s lack of a number 9 striker like Alan Shearer could hamper them as the season progresses.

The Magpies defeated Stoke 2-1 on Saturday through goals from Christian Atsu and Jamaal Lascelles to record their third successive Premier League victory.

The result saw the club move up to fourth place on the Premier League standings which is something that both Owen as well as fans of the club will be proud about especially as many people were questioning whether they will sufficiently equipped to compete in the Premier League this season just a few weeks ago.

Though Owen is happy, he does still feel that the clubs lack of a quality striker could end up costing them and said, “They actually signed a lot of players this summer, but none of them were that type of marquee signing that the Geordies love.

“They love a big signing at Newcastle in the Shearer ilk. They have some very good players there, Matt Ritchie, for example. But I think it’s a proper No 9 that they still lack.”
