Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has suggested that Liverpool should make a move for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk during the January transfer window.
The Dutch international van Dijk had been strongly linked with a move to the Merseyside club during the summer, however in the end no deal took place as the Reds insisted that they would not sell. Van Dijk wanted the move and handed in a transfer request to the Saints during the summer.
He has also not played in any of the clubs matches thus far this season as he had hoped that a deal could go through.
Merson has now suggested that Liverpool should aim to sign van Dijk again in January and wrote in his column in The Daily Star, “Liverpool should go back in for him in January because they need him. But Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City all needed centre-backs in the window too.
“There could be a lot of clubs in for him come January. If somebody puts a lot of money on the table, Southampton will have to sell.
“I just think it got petty because they didn’t want to sell to Liverpool after it all came out in public and because of the claims he was tapped up.
“But I still think that if anybody else had offered £60m or £70m before the window shut, they would have taken it.”
