Ex-Newcastle United star hangs up his boots

Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has announced his retirement from football following long-term knee injury problems.

Enrique played for Liverpool from 2011-2016 and went on to play 76 times in the Premier League for the Reds, scoring two goals.

During his time with the Merseyside club, Enrique went on to win the League Cup in 2012 under the helm of Kenny Dalglish.

He spent last season with Real Zaragoza and has been without a club since the end of last season. Enrique admitted that his injury problems took a mental and physical toll on him and caused him frustration. Though he would have liked to have played for a few more years, he had no choice but to make the decision.

In an emotional post on Instagram, he wrote, “It comes with a very heavy heart today to announce my retirement from professional football. Its been a very hard decision to take and accept.

“I would of loved to have played more years at my best level if my body would of let me but all good things have to come to an end and more in football. I just want to say a huge thanks to all of the fans and clubs who have supported me throughout my career

“You have been the best! I have been blessed to play for some of the best teams in the world, with some of the best players in the world. these memories will stay with me forever.”
