FA chairman Greg Clarke has insisted that Everton star Wayne Rooney remains an England footballing legend.

The 31-year-old Rooney who is the England and Manchester United all-time record goal scorer is widely regarded as being one of the best footballers of the modern generation. However despite this, his career has been blighted with controversies.

Most recently he was arrested for drink driving and is also reported to have been involved with a woman who was not his wife.

Toffees boss Ronald Koeman is set to be furious with the player over his behavior and will give him a talk once the team reconvenes after the international break.

Regardless of what may have transpired during Rooney’s career, Clarke still feels that he is a legend of the English game and said, “It’s with sadness that we see Wayne Rooney call time on his England career. He is an icon of his generation and an undoubted legend of the game.

“It goes without saying that Wayne has deservedly earned the right to be forever called a Three Lions great.”
