Everton star does not believe Chelsea defeat will dent their aspirations

Everton defender Mason Holgate has insisted that his side’s 2-0 loss to Chelsea this weekend will not dent their hopes of finishing in the top five this season.

The Toffees slumped to their first defeat of this season through goals from Cesc Fabregas and Alvaro Morata.

The club spent heavily this summer bringing in the likes of Michael Keane, Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen, Wayne Rooney and Sandro Ramirez in order to try and achieve a top five finish and potentially qualify for the Champions League.

The weekend defeat certainly did not help the Merseyside club in terms of ridding themselves of the reputation that they have of being unable to deliver against so called bigger clubs.

Despite this, Holgate preferred to focus on positives and said, “Sunday was the first game we’ve lost all season.

“We’ve been in Europe, we’ve played three games in the Premier League now, so I think we feel we’ve got a good squad, we’ve made a lot of good signings and, ultimately, I think we should be going for a top four or top five finish this season.

“In the changing room, and as a squad, that’s what we think we’re good enough to do, so that’s what we’re going to try to press to do.”
